The Inbetweeners

"If you like this(show), you probably weren't cool when you were younger" - Executive Producer of Inbetweeners
This is a show I am so grateful that my friends Awesome/Emily and Troy/Helen told me about. It's about four guys who are in struggling through their sixth form (the school year when they prepare for A-levels/end of high school) because they're socially awkward and end up getting into lots of embarrassing situations. It's on E4 which is the same channel that puts out Skins. In an interview one of the Inbetweeners boys says that Skins is what you wish your teenage years were like and Inbetweeners is actually what ended up happening.

HERE you can watch all of both seasons. It's hilarious.

How to get a bug out of your ear

This is me and Allie.
Tonight Allie was over at my house for a labor day bbq.
Something very unfortunate happened.
A moth type bug flew into her ear.
It became stuck there for 4-5 hours.
This was a very uncomfortable time for Allie.
For future reference here is how to get a bug out of an ear according to the Mayo Clinic...
  • Stay Calm. If you are treating someone else, especially a child, stay calm. This will help your patient stay calm as well.
  • Have the patient lean over with their ear facing upwards.
  • Fill the ear with baby oil, mineral oil, vegetable oil or olive oil. This will kill the insect and cause it to stop moving. If you don't have access to one of the oils listed above, you can attempt to use clean water only.
  • Flush the ear with warm water allowing it to overflow. Watch carefully for the insect to be flushed out.
  • If you are unable to fully remove the insect using this technique, seek medical treatment as soon as possible.

When The Avett Brothers came to St. Louis this summer I didn't go see them. How stupid was that? Answer: Extremely stupid.

Love and Marriage

Joanna Goddard is a blogger and magazine writer who just got married last weekend. While she is gone on her honeymoon she's having lots of guests write posts about what their secrets are to a good, happy marriage. They're all really great and lovely and restore your hope for long lasting unions in our sad divorce culture. Check out her blog A CUP OF JO.

<-- That's a picture of Joanna and Alex at their engagement photo session

There's also a really great article about marriage from the New York Times. The woman who wrote it is very impressive. Talk about being selfless. Please read it.
Those Aren't Fighting Words, Dear by Laura A. Munson

In a totally different direction here is a post about why nice guys do finish last. I don't know if I completely agree but there is definitely a merit of truth in there.
"You want to know why nice guys finish last? It’s because they aren’t willing to take a chance, they’re too tied to their rules. "

"What we really need to hear and more importantly feel (at that moment — from you, the nice guy)) is that we’re sexy, that our inner organs that separate us from you guys are actually worth something. That we’re so beautiful that you can’t and don’t care whether or not that kiss you’ve so desperately wanted to plant on us is going to ruin our friendship. We want you, the nice guy, to rebel against your rules and just do what feels right."

Laura Ling and Euna Lee share their story

Laura and Euna were held in captivity in North Korea for 140 days while working on a story for Current TV. They were sentenced to 12 years in a labor camp when they were rescued and brought home. Recently they released their first statement talking about what happened. These women are amazing.

"We were firmly back inside China when the soldiers apprehended us. Producer Mitch Koss and our guide were both able to outrun the border guards. We were not. We tried with all our might to cling to bushes, ground, anything that would keep us on Chinese soil, but we were no match for the determined soldiers. They violently dragged us back across the ice to North Korea and marched us to a nearby army base, where we were detained. Over the next 140 days, we were moved to Pyongyang, isolated from one another, repeatedly interrogated and eventually put on trial and sentenced to 12 years of hard labor."
