Lykke Li - Sadness Is A Blessing
By the end of this video all I could think was, "Aww, she's just acting out to get attention." A lot of the small children I work with do the same thing so it's pretty easy to spot. Sometimes it feels like negative attention is just better than no attention. Anyway, with the arrival of Lykke Li's newest album Wounded Rhymes my love for her has increased tenfold. If you give it a listen yours may multiply too.

Safari Njema!
This photo makes me miss living in Tanzania. It was actually taken in Kenya but I saw similar views in the Serengeti. The sky really does seem bigger in Africa. (By the way, safari njema means have a good trip!)

Mac People vs. PC People
PC people sound kind of lame. Mac people sound kind of stuck up. As a small child I was told , "We are PC people," and I have been ever since. Which one do you have?

Sleeping Soldiers - Tim Hetherington
I can't imagine what soldiers dream about while deployed. The late Tim Hetherington spent five months in the Korengal Valley in Afghanistan with US platoon in 2006-2007. One of the many pieces that came from that time was this short film depicting what fills the heads of soldiers when they get a chance to sleep. It's beautiful and scary. This one screen of a three screen installation that was first shown in New York.

The Men Who Don't Fit In - A Poem for Travelers
Robert W. Service |
There's a race of men that don't fit in, A race that can't stay still; So they break the hearts of kith and kin, And they roam the world at will. They range the field and they rove the flood, And they climb the mountain's crest; Theirs is the curse of the gypsy blood, And they don't know how to rest. If they just went straight they might go far; They are strong and brave and true; But they're always tired of the things that are, And they want the strange and new. They say: "Could I find my proper groove, What a deep mark I would make!" So they chop and change, and each fresh move Is only a fresh mistake. And each forgets, as he strips and runs With a brilliant, fitful pace,It's the steady, quiet, plodding ones Who win in the lifelong race. And each forgets that his youth has fled, Forgets that his prime is past, Till he stands one day, with a hope that's dead, In the glare of the truth at last. He has failed, he has failed; he has missed his chance; He has just done things by half.Life's been a jolly good joke on him, And now is the time to laugh. Ha, ha! He is one of the Legion Lost; He was never meant to win; He's a rolling stone, and it's bred in the bone; He's a man who won't fit in. |

Scala & Kolancy Brothers- Use Somebody (King of Leon cover)
Scala & Kolancy Brother first became heard throughout the world in the trailer for The Social Network when they covered Creep by Radiohead. They take well known songs, rework and transform them by having a female choir, often with minimal accompaniment, perform the new finished product. With this Kings of Leon cover, Use Somebody takes on a whole new depth of sadness. The video for the song hurt my heart and will leave you in a funk. You should still watch it, just have someone to hug nearby.

Woodkid - Iron
This video is visually transfixing. Without an obvious story to draw you in, the viewer is left to piece together how each of the individuals apply to one another, if they do at all. The majestic (too dramatic of a word? maybe, maybe not) horns let you know something is about to go down alongside the war drums that are essentially saying, "bring it." Woodkid is Yoann Lemoine. Singer/songwriter is only his most recent resume addition. Originally, Lemoine is a music video and commercial director as well as a photographer. You'll also notice model Agyness Deyn and black clouds of smoke that remind me of the Deatheaters from Harry Potter.

Miller Williams Quote
Something to strive for...
“Have compassion for everyone you meet,
even if they don’t want it.
What appears bad manners, an ill temper
or cynicism is always a sign of things no ears
have heard, no eyes have seen.
You do not know what wars are going on
down there where the spirit meets the bone.”

Florence and The Machine - My Boy Builds Coffins
After hearing a recording of Ke$ha singing without autotune it is quite refreshing to hear a naturally stunning voice like Florence Welch's. This 2008 video is from before she became more well known but when she starts to sing about halfway through her impressive voice will fill your tiny computer speakers to capacity.

Childish Gambino
Recognize this guy? You may know him as Troy from Community. A few weeks ago he released an EP under his rap alter ego Childish Gambino. There's also been a much blogged about addition to Jamie XX's remix of Adele's Rolling In The Deep and his remix of Kanye's All Of The Lights. You can download his EP here (he didn't actually name the release anything but many people have taken to calling it Freaks and Geeks EP). If you really want to be on top of things he released this track a week ago.

Pandit - Pack Your Bags
I love this beautifully shot video for Pandit's Pack Your Bags. Honestly, I liked the video more than the song originally but with a couple of viewings the song has grown on me. It gives you a glimpse into heartbreak. Each half of the couple seem to be miserable yet neither one is scrambling to reunite with the other. What happened?? Did he move to a snowy nowhere? Did she go away to school? Maybe one made out with the other's best friend and it was a terrible decision but it's hard to forgive cheating? One accidentally shot the other one's pet and didn't show enough remorse?
