Whoa!

"A nine stories high student housing building at the University of Twente in the Netherlands sports a climbing wall on its façade. Because what else would biomedical technology and applied physics majors do with their free time?"

Community

"We have a generation of young people now who are living in a constant state of “dropped out-ness” from the real world and from its history and from community and from the integrity of themselves. …And they don’t even know that …Most of them don’t know what community means because community means assuming responsibility for other people and that means paying attention and not following your own will but submitting your will and giving up the world of intimacy and power you have in the little consumer world that you have created… When they look community in the face and realize that it means raw, skin to skin contact with other people for whom you have become responsible…that’s when they back away."

Birthday weekend

For my birthday this summer I am going to Chicago and it is going to be fantastic! Here are two of the reasons why...

At the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry they have a massive exhibition of all things Harry Potter. Everything there are real props from all 6 movies. http://www.harrypotterexhibition.com/

The Taste of Chicago!!!

"There’s food for everybody’s taste at the annual Taste of Chicago where you’ll find more thanTaste of Chicago logo 300 menu items at over 70 restaurants.

Plenty of free entertainment is available to amuse you before, during and after your dining experience. Music from internationally known talent such as Stevie Wonder and Bonnie Raitt is at the Petrillo Music Shell. See cooking demonstrations from renowned chefs such as Art Smith."

All the Chicagoans who have been to the Taste talk about it like it's the best thing in the world.

I also just want to explore some neighborhoods and see what there is to find. We might stay in a hostel so as not to worry about coming in and out of someone's house at all hours. Plus maybe we'll meet some random new people. Or if you know of a cheap hotel downtown let me know too.

An Admission

I secretly judge people a little when they talk about Africa like it's one big country. When someone says they're going to live in Africa instead of Ghana or Rwanda or whatever. It just plays into the stereotype a little more that all the countries and all the people are the exactly the same.

If you ever hear me say something about my time there make sure I say Tanzania or Moshi. If I don't, you can let me have it.
